New York Asian Women's Center

The New York Asian Women’s Center (NYAWC) strives to help battered Asian women overcome violence and govern their own lives, free of abuse. The Center also works to raise public awareness about domestic violence, advocate for the rights of battered women, and create an agenda for social change.

Description and/or History:
The NYAWC was founded in 1982 by a small group of volunteers from the Asian community. Since that time, the Center has grown to more than 60 staff members fluent in 15 Asian languages. Each year, we receive over 3,000 hotline calls and offer intensive counseling and advocacy assistance to more than 400 battered women and their children. Current programs include: Emergency Shelter Program, with a total of 57 beds for women and their children; Shelter Alternatives: Fostering Empowerment (SAFE), serving victims of domestic violence from within their own communities; the Children’s Program, helping children overcome the trauma of witnessing violence; and Community Education/Outreach.
For over 25 years, NYAWC has dedicated itself to making the city a safer place for battered women and children. Our goals are to get women out of immediate danger and then empower them with resources, information and job training to help them lead independent lives.
