Description and/or History:
The Mount Vernon Hotel Museum is a historic house museum located on Manhattan's Upper East Side on 61st Street between York and First Avenues. The Museum promotes dissemination of historical knowledge through tours of its historic rooms, education programs, exhibitions, publications, lectures, symposia, and public programs.
Tours are offered to the public Tuesday through Sunday from 11 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.
The Museum building, on land that had belonged to Williams Stephens Smith and his wife. Abigail Adams Smith, was constructed in 1799 as a carriage house. The building was converted into the Mount Vernon Hotel in 1826. It became a private residence for the Jeremiah Towle family in 1833 and his descendants resided there until 1905. At that time, Towle's daughters sold the building to the Standard Gas & Life (today's Con Edison). In 1924, the building was sold to the Colonial Dames of American, who then restored the building and opened it as the Abigail Adams Smith Museum in 1939. In 1988 the Museum's Board votes to interpret the museum as the 1826-1833 Mount Vernon Hotel. In 2000, the Museum's name is changed to the the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden.
