Organization Details:
Sanctuary for Families envisions a society in which freedom from domestic violence is a basic human right. We are dedicated to the safety, healing, and self-sufficiency of battered women and their children. To that end, we offer a broad range of high-quality services including shelter, legal assistance, and counseling. We work to end domestic violence and its far-reaching impact through outreach, education, and advocacy, and to create a world where every woman and child lives with dignity.
Description and/or History:
Sanctuary for Families is New York’s largest nonprofit agency exclusively dedicated to serving the clinical, economic, legal, and shelter needs of domestic violence victims and their children. We offer a comprehensive, interconnected range of services including crisis and transitional housing, individual and group counseling, legal services, housing and benefits assistance, a mentoring program, and a specialized program for children who have witnessed or experienced abuse.
Sanctuary for Families was founded in 1984 as a network of small safe homes on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Now in its 25th year, Sanctuary for Families provides direct services to more than 8,000 domestic violence survivors and their children annually.
