For monolingual speakers of a language other than English, navigating the court system can be an especially daunting experience. As part of its mission to enhance access to justice for all New Yorkers, LIFT has had some of its legal resource guides translated into different languages. LIFT is seeking volunteers who are fluent in and able to translate written materials into Arabic, Haitian-Creole, Hebrew, Korean, Japanese, Tagalog, Urdu or Yiddish. Volunteers will assist with our ongoing efforts to make all 35 of our Family Court legal resource guides available in these languages.
Hours: Flexible
Minimum time commitment: 2 hours per week
The ideal candidate for this position will demonstrate:
• Fluency and translation experience; and
• Dedication to helping children and families.
All volunteers receive an introduction to LIFT’s services in the Family. Volunteers are asked to commit to translating at least one guide. The amount of time it takes to translate a guide is approximately 15 hours.
