The role of a Patient Advocate volunteer is to provide non-clinical assistance to Emergency Department (ED) patients and staff by offering emotional support to patients (and their families) and helping with non-clinical tasks. Volunteers assist in the main ED, Fast Track treatment area and the main waiting area. Volunteers provide a liaison service for patients and family members awaiting emergency medical service.

The Department of Volunteer Services gives general orientation including Safety, Infection Control, Patients’ Rights, HIPAA and other important information. Emergency Department Nursing staff provides orientation to patient care and on-the-job instruction.

While on duty, the Patient Support volunteer is required to wear a volunteer vest provided by the Department of Volunteer Services.
