Be A Rescue Squad Volunteer on Roosevelt Island

Roosevelt Island Search and Rescue Volunteers (RISAR) is looking for volunteers who would like to be part of an Emergency Services First Response unit on Roosevelt Island. Rescue Squad members will respond to Emergency Calls from the Roosevelt Island community, provide Basic Life Support (BLS) care until an ambulance arrives.

RISAR is an authorized Basic Life Support - First Response (AED) agency with the New York State Department of Health and with the Regional Emergency Medical Services Council of New York City (NYC REMSCO). RISAR is also in the process of applying for an Certificate of Need for our Ambulance Certificate, so we may expand our service to include transporting patients to the hospital.

Certification as a New York State Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is required for the initial person providing care. A NYS Driver's License is required to operate vehicles. Other members are REQUIRED to obtain CPR / AED and First Aid certification before being permitted to ride one of the Response Vehicles, HOWEVER, this training will be provided to RISAR members FREE OF CHARGE.

 Car - RFK Bridge to 31st Avenue, make a RIGHT. Go one block to ASTORIA BLVD, make a RIGHT. Go to 21st Avenue, make a LEFT. Go to 36th Street, make a RIGHT. Cross the Roosevelt Island Bridge and make a LEFT and follow MAIN STREET to 546 Main Street. Car - QUEENS BORO BRIDGE (Upper Roadway) to 21st Street / Roosevelt Island. Make a RIGHT. Go to QUEENS BORO PLAZA SOUTH and make a LEFT. Go one block to VERNON BLVD and make a RIGHT. Go to 36th Street and make a LEFT onto the Roosevelt Island Bridge. Make a LEFT over the bridge on to MAIN STREET. Follow MAIN STREET to 546 Main Street. Train - F Train to Roosevelt Island. Walk to the RIGHT after leaving the train station to Main Street and follow to 546 Main Street. Tram - Take the Roosevelt Island Tram on 59th Street and 2nd Avenue directly to the Island. Take the RED Roosevelt Island Bus (25 cents) to 546 Main Street. Please call in advance for an Interview before coming to the Island.
