The New York City Long Term Care Ombudsman Program needs volunteer advocates to protect the rights of long term care residents throughout the five boroughs. Bilingual volunteers are especially needed.
New York Foundation for Senior Citizens Ombudsman Program offers volunteer opportunities for adults who want to help protect the rights and maintain the highest quality of care for New York City’s 54,000 nursing and adult home residents.
Volunteer Ombudsmen visit nursing and adult home residents to observe and help the residents identify and positively resolve their concerns. Bilingual volunteers are especially needed.
One of the program’s volunteers describes his experience this way, “Being a Volunteer Ombudsman gives me the ability to be the voice of, break through language barriers for and help nursing home residents who could otherwise not be heard. I get tremendous satisfaction knowing that if I help residents solve problems – whether they are major or small – I can make a big difference in the quality of their lives.” He says, “Volunteering is a labor of love. I look forward to it each and every week.”
To become an Volunteer Ombudsman, all it takes is 36 hours of certification training and a willingness to give four hours of your time per week at a facility near your home or workplace for at least one year.
Ombudsmen are expected to be available by phone to receive cases that are reported to the program's office. They are also expected to attend at least four meetings per year for the purpose of ongoing training.
