Volunteer Opportunity Details: |
|
The New York City Long Term Care Ombudsman Program needs volunteer advocates to protect the rights of long term care residents throughout the five boroughs. Ombudsmen make regular visits to nursing homes and adult homes, listen to concerns expressed by residents, and work to make their lives better. Bilingual volunteers are especially needed.
One of our volunteers describes her experience this way: "Being an Ombudsman gives me the opportunity to help some of the most helpless people in our society. I get tremendous satisfaction knowing that if I help a resident solve a problem---whether it is big or small---it can make a big difference in that person's life."
To become an Ombudsman, a person must be at least 21 years old, provide three acceptable references, and complete a free 36-hour training program. Ombudsmen may expect to volunteer approximately four hours per week, preferably during business hours. Ombudsmen are expected to be available by phone to receive cases that are reported to the program's office. They are also expected to attend at least four meetings per year for the purpose of ongoing training.
