Family Caregiver Liaison
Last updated on August 17, 2009

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

I'm interested in this opportunity

A family caregiver is any unpaid person who provides physical and/or emotional care for a family member, neighbor or friend who is ill or disabled. The goal of the Family Caregiver Program is to empower, educate and support the primary caregivers of patients. We are looking for empathetic and mature volunteer interns who are interested in learning more about this emerging area of focus in health care.

The Family Caregiver Program provides an excellent opportunity for Social Work students to work first hand helping people through active listening. Students to learn about the issues that affect families when their relatives are hospitalized and how they deal with them. New York Methodist Hospital provides volunteers with both hands-on opportunities to work with caregivers as well as enriching activities to broaden their understanding of the issue.

Hands-On Experience

This aspect of the program allows each volunteer to interact with caregivers on a regular basis. Volunteers visit the rooms of newly admitted patients to speak with caregivers and offer support and information.

We are looking for empathetic and mature volunteers who are interested in assisting caregivers by providing informational and emotional support.

Family Caregiver volunteers are trained to answer questions concerning hospital and neighborhood resources, and to provide support by active listening.

If you are a good listener, compassionate and attentive, please join our team!
