Volunteer Opportunity Details:

I'm interested in this opportunity

Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center is looking for individuals who have an interest in sharing information that will empower patients to make informed health care decisions and improve health outcomes.

Health Literacy volunteers work with patients in a variety of settings through out the hospital – those with a diabetes diagnosis and/or kidney disease primarily. The volunteer provides information sessions to groups and/or conducts one-on-one health literacy sessions.

Health Literacy volunteers increase a patient’s skills in areas such as understanding appointment schedules, the basic of navigating nutrition labels, understanding information listed on a prescription label, and managing multiple medications. The Health Literacy volunteer also educates and empowers caregivers of those diagnosed with diabetes.

Do you have good communications skills and public speaking skills (or willing to learn these skills)? If yes, this might be the volunteer assignment for you!

• Volunteers must attend the orientation presented by the Volunteer Service Department and comply with hospital standard with regard to medical clearance, background check, etc.

• Volunteers will receive training and coaching specific to the Health Literacy program following the completion of the volunteer orientation

• In exchange for the training and one-on-one coaching the volunteer receives, volunteers will need to make a commitment to the program
o Students: Hours specific to school requirements or a minimum of 90 hours (and/or 16 Health Literacy sessions after training)
o Community Volunteers: 100 hours within one year
