Volunteer Opportunity Details:

I'm interested in this opportunity

OPERA America — the nonprofit service organization for opera — leads and serves the entire opera community, supporting the creation, presentation and enjoyment of opera. Artistic services help opera companies and creative and performing artists to improve the quality of productions and increase the creation and presentation of North American works. Information, technical and administrative services to opera companies reflect the need for strengthened leadership among staff, trustees and volunteers. Education, audience development and community services are designed to enhance all forms of opera enjoyment.

OPERA America’s Information Service department is the primary source for authoritative information for opera professionals and the general public. The department produces both print and online publications; provides in-house editorial, proofreading and design services; maintains general information files and databases; and provides informational assistance to the field. The Research Manager oversees historical data, including the performance activity of over 150 producing member organizations. OPERA America’s Information Service is a collegial member of the Metropolitan New York Library Council (METRO).

The Information Service Intern will:

  • Complete data entry for and the upkeep of OPERA America’s online database of member performance activity, the Schedule of Performances. Production information includes artists (directors, designers and performers), dates and venues, as well as indicating productions that are world or national premieres, concert versions or co-productions.
  • Assist the Research Manager and Director of Research and Publications in special research projects. May include the Labor Agreement Survey; generating reports, including general queries; and other duties as assigned.

The required skill set for the Information Service Intern includes:

  • Having experience with online research methods.
  • Having strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Being detail oriented and able to manage multiple projects while meeting deadlines.
  • Having experience with Microsoft Office Suite, including Access Database, Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Having knowledge of opera or other performing arts; experience with nonprofit organizations is preferred.

Position available as of February 2009; start date negotiable; commitment of at least four months (8-10 hours per week) is required. While this is an unpaid internship, successful candidates will gain the opportunity to network with professionals from the field of opera, and they will gain first-hand experience in the daily operations of a nonprofit arts organization.

This opportunity is sponsored by: OPERA America, Inc.
