Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Planning for a better future starts by believing that one is possible. On New York Cares' Adult Education projects, volunteers help capable but struggling New Yorkers, many of whom are transitioning out of homelessness, build a brighter future for themselves and their families. Here are some programs that need your help:

English Conversation Partners - Enjoy lively conversation with adult immigrants while helping them develop language skills that are critical to their success in this country.

Citizenship Through English - Prepare immigrants to pass their U.S. Citizenship Exams and fulfill their dreams of becoming an American citizen.

Job Readiness - Assist adults entering or re-entering the job market as they revise their résumés and cover letters and prepare for interviews.

Computer Tutorials - Open up a world of possibilities by helping adults develop basic computer skills, such as using the Internet, e-mail, and basic word processing software. No special computer skills required.

GED/Adult Basic Education - Serve as an academic skills or GED tutor and help students develop basic reading and math skills. Work with them one-on-one on materials such as letters from their child's school, employment applications, or books.

Financial Literacy - Help low-income New Yorkers improve their fiscal awareness and maximize their limited income. During tax season, projects include assisting with filing tax returns.

Serving at a soup kitchen is better than 4 star dining

I'm a self proclaimed soup kitchen groupie. New York Cares Hunger projects have allowed me serve the poor, the homeless and disenfranchised in soup kitchens and by delivering meals to the homebound all around the city. Nothing could be more fun! posted by Julia Masi on August 13, 2009
