All Stars Project, Inc.
Get Organized and Lead (GOAL) Summer Internship
Community Organizing and Philanthropy Internship at a Multicultural Youth Development Center in New York City
June 13th—July 31st, 2009 (Part-time, unpaid)

Unique opportunity for 30-40 motivated college students to support a grassroots citywide organizing and fundraising campaign to expand innovative inner-city youth development programs.

The All Stars Project, Inc. is seeking energetic and socially committed students to work with New York City’s leading “out-of-the-box” youth development programs. Headquartered in a multi-million dollar performing arts and education complex on 42nd Street, the All Stars Project creates ground-breaking performance programs that enrich the lives of thousands of inner-city youth each year.

For over 25 years, the All Stars has created these programs independent of government funding through its successful and nontraditional approach to community outreach and fundraising.

Community Organizing in the 21st Century – Making a Difference in Urban and Inner-city Communities
The All Stars Project is the fastest-growing inner-city youth development non-profit organization in the country (www.allstars.org). The All Stars has created a unique community organizing internship--an opportunity that will allow you to work with and learn from leading performance and community-organizing experts, non-profit executives and corporate professionals. You will also have the chance to interact with inner-city youth leaders in an effort to create a new kind of community through the work of the All Stars Project.

How It Works:
Learning from some of the most successful community organizers and grassroots fundraisers in the country, interns will be trained in the All Stars' hallmark street-tabling approach to community organizing – through performance, raising funds to sponsor underprivileged young people to participate in our free programs.

The interns will also participate in group projects created based on their interests. Specifically, the All Stars is looking to continue growing its online networking community, and this internship will be a chance for you to develop this network using sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, or your other medium of choice.

Interns will attend meetings with leading donors and Board members of the All Stars Project, including CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, Managing Directors on Wall Street, hedge fund executives, and attorneys. From these leaders, interns will learn about new models of philanthropy, corporate social responsibility, and diversity in the community and the boardroom in an effort to expand their knowledge on work in the non-profit arena.

This internship is a leadership development opportunity for students interested in fundraising, community activism, youth empowerment, and performance, who are looking for a challenging experience where they can build programs, develop leadership skills, and make a significant difference for inner-city youth.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Face-to-face fundraising in outdoor locations throughout New York City
  • Projects building and expanding the structure of our fundraising operation, enhancing relationships with donors, and creatively publicizing our programs
  • Weekly seminar on topics including: community organizing, non-profit management, youth development, theatre, volunteerism and arts administration
  • Meetings with non-profit leaders, corporate executives, and donors, who will discuss their involvement with the All Stars and their roles in philanthropy
  • Interfacing with the All Stars youth programs and the young people involved
  • Opportunity to participate in additional community outreach activities
    • Verbal communication skills
    • Enthusiasm for speaking directly with the public
    • Ability to adopt a script and learn how to ‘perform’ it
    • Willingness to work as part of a team in a multi-cultural setting
    • Commitment to grassroots activism to affect social change
    • Passion for supporting the social and cultural development of inner-city youth
