Sock Monkey Sewing Volunteers for Workshops for artists with special needs
Last updated on April 25, 2009

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

I'm interested in this opportunity

Since 1999, fresh art has created sock monkey sewing workshops for New York City artists with special needs. The workshops are held two to three times a year at various supportive housing facilities and drop in centers for homeless men and women in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Generally these are social service agencies fresh art works with on a regular basis however sometimes they are new to us.

The workshops are for one and a half to two hours on a week night or a Saturday and range in length for four to eight weeks. A volunteer needs to commit to at least three sessions of volunteering. Depending on the size of the group we will have two to four volunteers working with a group.
The groups are not larger than ten.

The sewing workshops teach the artists to hand sew their own sock monkeys. Experience with working with special needs populations is helpful but not required. Those interested in teaching or assisting with these workshops have to attend at least six of the regular sock monkey sewing Mondays sessions at fresh art (please see the listing for sock monkey sewing volunteers) in order to qualify for this opportunity.

Please check fresh art's web site home page (www.freshartnyc.org) for dates of the next sock monkey sewing group and dates for our other activities. www.freshartnyc.org

For volunteering to help with the sock monkey sewing workshops for artists with special needs, fresh art requires attendance at no less than six of the regular fresh art sock monkey sewing groups that meet every other Monday night.
