The Inwood House Mentoring Program recognizes that teenagers are at the critical stage of becoming independent while making decisions regarding their future. For pregnant and parenting teens, the added responsibility of parenthood causes additional stress and uncertainty. Furthermore, many of our pregnant and parenting teens have experienced particularly challenging times, having grown up in foster care or experienced homelessness. For these young people, a stable, caring adult can make a world of difference in their lives. One-on-one mentoring relationships provide consistent support that is critical for all young people.
Mentors are matched with a pregnant or parenting teen from one of Inwood House’s programs in order to create an opportunity for these youth to form a supportive relationship and a strong, ongoing connection with a positive adult in the community. Following a few initial visits on site, the mentoring pair can choose to meet with each other both on and off site. These outings allow the mentoring match to build their relationship based on shared positive experiences.
Mentors are responsible, caring, patient adults, age 21+, who commit to a one year minimum relationship with a young person. Additionally, mentors must: demonstrate an ability to consider the special needs of the youth we serve; be able to commit to weekly contact with their mentee and participate in periodic mentoring events; agree to participate in monthly match supervision with the Mentoring Coordinator; participate in quarterly trainings on topics relevant to the youth being mentored.
