Become A Mentor: Caring Professional Adults Needed to Make a Difference in a Young Person's Life!
Last updated on June 19, 2009

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

I'm interested in this opportunity

“My parents never even graduated from high school and don't speak English, so my mentor gave me tremendous amount of help with my college process. Without her, I really would not have known what to do.”

APEX is looking for committed professionals to provide support, friendship and guidance to an Asian American high school or middle school student for the new mentoring year beginning in August 2009.

You can help a youth to
-improve academically
-broaden their horizons
-develop stronger interpersonal skills
-cultivate a more positive self-image

To help facilitate the mentoring relationship and foster a sense of shared experience between other program participants, APEX organizes group events, which have included rafting trips, apple picking, and picnics in the park.

MIDDLE SCHOOL MENTORING PROGRAM (for students in grades 6 - 8) is site-based and takes place at PS 1 in Chinatown every other Saturday from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. It offers a semi-structured format to the mentoring experience, a good introduction for first-time volunteers.
CONTACT: Kelly Wong for more information or to sign up at kelly.wong@apex-ny.org or 212-748-1225 ext. 102

HIGH SCHOOL MENTORING PROGRAM is community-based, which means that mentors and mentees make their own arrangements to meet every other week on any day that works best. This also means that High School pairs decide their own agenda as to what to do during their time together, such as visiting museums, watching movies, or playing sports.
CONTACT: Amanda Ing for more information or to sign up at Amanda.ing@apex-ny.org or 212-748-1225 ext. 103

There is a one year commitment and mentoring pairs meet for a minimum of two hours every other week for Middle School and High School programs.

HOW TO SIGN UP:
Turn in your mentoring application and select a Mentor Training date. You can email, fax or mail your application to an APEX staff member (see contact information above). Once your application has been received, an APEX staff will contact you to set up an interview.
