Make a Difference in the Life of a Child

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

I'm interested in this opportunity

Foster Care Third Party Reviewer needed to join an excellent group home staff and clients to sit in on case reviews of children placed in group homes by the City of New York. Meetings are held every six months to review each child’s safety and well being while living in the group home. A plan is developed to help each child reunify with his birth family, proceed to live independently or search for an adoptive family who will provide permanency and stability for the youth in the future.

The third party reviewer facilitates permanency planning by: asking questions which will assist participants to examine various alternatives; being supportive of parents and child as well as caseworker; offering suggestions as to resources and services available; managing conflicts which may arise; and confronting those issues which are not being addressed adequately. Although the expectation for this role is that the individual will be objective, he or she should not be uninformed. …. It is not the purpose of the third party reviewer to take over the caseworker’s or caseworker’s supervisor’s role.

After the meeting, the third party reviewer summarizes his/her findings in writing. The ideal third party reviewer is a social worker who is retired, unemployed or who has free time during the day. Other interested parties can be trained to help out. We will train anyone who can take on the important responsibility. Make a difference in the life of a child.

We need help only one or two days per week at our Bronx location. The office is conveniently located just downstairs from the Burnside/Jerome Avenue subway stop on the Lexington Avenue line.

Good writing skills, professional, social work experience. We will train anyone who can take on the important responsibility.
