Volunteer Opportunity Details:

I'm interested in this opportunity

Did you know there was a woodland in the Bronx that dates back to the American Revolution? Did you know you it was being restored by a new grassroots organization? Do you want to know how you can help?

Friends of the Woods is a grassroots community organization dedicated to persevering the history and exposing the beauty within University Woods. Located in the University Heights section of the Bronx, we provide programming that empowers, educates, enriches and entertains our community. Friends of the Woods (FOTW) was founded in Summer 2006 by Brandy Cochrane, a resident of the University Heights community. With only one walk through University Woods, an instant obligation to restore this beautiful mass of land was born.

The first phase of improvement at the site included cleaning it up and making it usable. Our second phase includes improving the environment quality of the site and also using it for community enrichment and economic development.

Host a Class:
Friends of the Woods is always looking to bring new and exciting programming to University Woods. We are looking for people interested in hosting classes on environment education (composting, gardening, watershed, etc), on economic development (workshops on business development, event planning, resume building, etc) or an art class (sketching, leaf art, mural painting, etc).

We have community members that range from youth to senior. Let us know what group you would like to host a workshop for and we will add it to our schedule. Family programs are also in hide demand- Workshops that allow parents and children to work together. Class can be scheduled on the weekend or a week day.

If you are interested in hosting a workshop at University Woods, please contact us at info@uniwoods.com with your workshop proposal.

We would appreciate to have on board those with a knowledge of horticulture and community gardening. However we would as like to have anyone who is willing to teach a skill set such as grant writing, painting, sculpting or business plan writing to come pass on their knowledge in a workshop setting.
