Getting Kids Back On Track - Homework Help and More
Last updated on August 4, 2009

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

I'm interested in this opportunity

We're looking for volunteers who are willing to spend a few hours each week helping kids complete their homework, participating in supplemental workshops, and having fun!

A few years back a young man came into our office after seeing a listing on this website. He started to volunteer and while he interacted with many of the students in our program, he formed an especially tight relationship with one of the boys. The boy's face would light up when the volunteer walked in the room and over the course of two years of working together the boy made clear progress in academics as well as self-confidence. Now not all volunteer opportunities are the same. It takes patience and persistence to work with middle school students in an after-school environment. It can be difficult and frustrating at times but the rewards are significant if you stick with it.

Volunteers assist the children with their assigned homework as well as provide supplementary educational services. Most of this work will take place on a one-on-one basis and you will have the opportunity to form meaningful relationships with multiple students. Tutoring will take place in one hour sessions and it is up to the volunteer weather he/she would like to stay one or two hours per day. All tutors will be provided with training and support throughout their volunteer experience.

Most importantly, you should enjoy working with children and be devoted to improving educational opportunities for your students. In order to work in an after-school environment with middle school students, a certain amount of patience and persistence is necessary. A background in teaching or tutoring is not necessary for children at these academic levels. Basic math, reading, and writing skills are helpful and an ability to focus a child's energy in a positive direction is helpful. If you specialize in one or more academic subjects, we will be more than happy to take that into consideration.
