Volunteer Opportunity Details: |
|
Three to four times per month, volunteers bring lunch and spend the time with Elementary or Middle School students at a participating New York City Public School. The program is a great opportunity for volunteers to share their humor, knowledge, and life experiences while having a direct positive impact on the child’s school life. The program aims to develop social and academic skills, building the foundation for future success.
A BBBS of NYC Program Manager screens all interested volunteers and students, matches the mentors with the children, develops the curriculum, plans the program activities and is always on site for program days. During most of these visits, the student and volunteer interact individually in a powerful one-to-one mentoring relationship, allowing them to get to know each other better. The School Based Mentoring Program helps “Bigs” and “Littles” in developing social and academic skills while focusing on team work, communication and ethics. Each program day has a theme that focuses on specific projects and skills.
Participating in the School-Based Mentoring Program is a great way to volunteer with a group of friends and to meet fellow volunteers. School-Based Bigs are also invited to networking events and other BBBS of NYC events through out the year
Volunteers must be 18 and older and have lived in the tri-state area for over 6 months. Must be able to commit for the school year from October 2009-June 2010.
