The Facts
HIV/AIDS is not over. The roots of the epidemic are wide and deep, from stigma and misinformation to the increasing cost of care. Women, people of color, youth continue to be disproportionately infected with HIV. We believe we can end the epidemic by addressing the underlying causes, shifting cultural beliefs and promoting smart behaviors that empower our clients physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually.
The Position
The prevention division at Harlem United focuses on reducing the spread of HIV, Viral Hepatitis, and related diseases. Through results-oriented and measured outreach, prevention, and education volunteers are paired w/experienced staff and canvass neighborhood in Upper Manhattan, South Bronx, and Brooklyn. Volunteers distribute HIV/AIDS educational materials, safer sex supplies, HIV testing information and Harm Reduction supplies.
Who Are We Looking For?
We are looking for non-judgmental, compassionate people. You should be comfortable working with all kinds of folks in street-based environments. Good organizational skills and a love for interacting with people are very important. Other than that you don't need any other experience or qualifications.
The Commitment
After you complete training, we ask that you commit to a minimum of three months weekly schedule or six months on a monthly schedule of service for about four to six hours per shift to ensure stability for the staff and the people we serve.
The Perks
This is an unpaid position however, it is an opportunity like few others to become involved with an agency where you can be creative and contribute to the important work we do. We are also happy to work with you to get academic or internship credit.
Requirements:
The Testing & Counseling staff will schedule you to trainings on HIV Testing and confidentiality. Experienced staff will conduct orientation on basic Outreach w/HIV testing, education and counseling. Experience in working with street-based populations, HIV/AIDS, substance use/abuse counseling are always an added benefit but not required. Good organizational skills and being a great "people person" are key for this opportunity.
