NYC Cool Roofs - Join our Rooftop Cooling Program!
Last updated on October 8, 2009

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

I'm interested in this opportunity

NYC Cool Roofs is a green initiative to reduce energy costs, greenhouse gas emissions, and local temperatures by coating the roofs white. Volunteers are needed to help coat 5-10 roofs in Long Island City (exact location tbd) from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm beginning the week of September 21 and extending until October 15.

The coating is a three step process and buildings will require at least 3 days of work with 24 rain-free hours in between each step in order to be completed. Volunteers are encouraged to commit to taking a roof through all three phases, but can volunteer for one day. If the weather cooperates, we are aiming to have this project completed between September 21 and October 15. Sign up for dates within this time, but if you can be flexible for later dates, we may need you.

We also need Registration and Food Support Volunteers to help those who are up on the roofs cleaning and painting. Volunteers will help with check-in, directions and water/snack distribution.

When you click on "I am interested in this opportunity" at the top of the page, PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR DATES OF AVAILABILITY IN THE RESPONSE FORM.

This project is a partnership of NYC Service - the Mayor's initiative to promote volunteerism in NYC --, the Community Environmental Center and Green City Force. APOC, a division of Gardner-Gibson, distributed by Bradco Supply Corp is generously donating all roof coating and other supplies and services to the pilot program.

This pilot project will coat approximately 100,000 square feet of rooftops to demonstrate the importance of cooling all the roofs of New York City. NYC Service and CEC will provide instructions, hands-on training, and supplies to green jobs trainees and community volunteers who will work with site supervisors to coat the building roofs. Come join us!

• Who can volunteer? Our volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds, including work force development groups and volunteer organizations. You need to be at least 18 years old.
• Is it difficult? You don't need any prior skills or experience. You should be in good health, be reasonably fit and prepared to take part to the best of your ability. This is a labor-intensive project on a roof (up to 6 floors) out in the hot sun.
• Do I need any special skills? All volunteers are provided with training on the project and safety instructions. There will always be a Cool Roofs Team Leader available. Any essential safety equipment will be provided, and you will be shown how to use it.
• Who are the other volunteers? As a volunteer you are part of a team. As well as making a real difference to the environment, volunteering is a great way to make friends. The other volunteers on your team might be travelers, students, or locals who have lived in the area for years.
• What about food? Simply bring your lunch and water bottle with you.
• What do I need to wear? We recommend wearing old work clothes. T-shirts and shorts or jeans are fine. Light-weight shoes such as sneakers are sufficient. Wear a hat and sunglasses. And finally, sunscreen with a high protection factor.
