Become an Intergenerational Mentor!
Make a difference in a young person’s life who wants to enter the Healthcare profession!

Jewish Home Lifecare’s Geriatric Career Development (GCD) Program is starting its first online mentoring initiative. Our goal is to match 60 healthcare professionals and/or graduate students in a healthcare profession with 60 high school juniors in the GCD Program.

The Health Professional Youth Mentoring Program will be a new component of the GCD Program that will match youth in our Manhattan and Bronx based programs with health care professionals to build relationships to support their academic and professional development. The GCD program is a ground breaking, experiential youth workforce development program providing disadvantaged high school students with job training and clinical skills to prepare them to enter the healthcare field. Students leave the program with extensive knowledge about the field of health and aging, experience working with elders, direct care skills and exposure to the vast array of careers within a large health care institution.
What do Mentors do?
• Send an email once a week to their mentees beginning in October and ending in late May.
o Mentors set aside time each week for structured, curriculum-based email correspondence with their mentees.
• Meet in-person with their mentee 4-6 times over the course of the academic school year.
o Mentors will meet their mentees at GCD hosted events either on weekday evenings (6-8PM) or on the weekends (1-3PM). These events will include a games night, trip to a museum and a holiday party.
