Reach out and help a special needs youth
Last updated on October 26, 2009

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

I'm interested in this opportunity

You would work with small group of special needs/developmentally disabled youth (autism/mental retardation) who are very loving and responsive. Some are able to do amazing things: for example, if you tell one young man your date of birth, he can immediately tell you the day of the week you were born on! The program, led by a highly creative director, includes homework help, literacy, math, computer literacy, gym/recreation, and arts and crafts.

We prefer someone who has had experience with special needs children or youth, though if you are a patient person who is willing to be trained, you will gain much satisfaction from this experience. Whatever your skills, we would match them to our program.

This opportunity is sponsored by: Kingsbridge Heights Community Center (KHCC)

Walk east on 231st Street to Bailey Avenue. Cross Bailey and turn left toward Summit Place (which you will access by going up stairs that are between a church and a bodega). IRT #1 northbound: Exit at 231st Street and Broadway. Walk east on 231st Street (going over the Deegan Expressway) to Bailey Avenue. NYC Bus: #7, #9, & #20 all stop at 231 St. & Broadway. Walk 2 blocks west on 231 to Bailey Avenue. Cross Bailey and turn left. Go up Summit Place (a step street). Cross Heath Avenue and continue up a steep hill for 1 block. Metro North (Hudson River Line): Trains from Grand Central and 125th Street going north and from Croton, Yonkers, etc going south stop at the Marble Hill Station. In some situations we may be able to pick you up there; it is 6 to 10 minutes from KHCC by van. Driving: From Manhattan: Take the FDR Drive north to the Willis Avenue Bridge exit; take the bridge and follow signs to the Major Deegan Expressway. Follow the Deegan north past Yankee stadium to 230th Street. When exiting, turn right off the ramp and then make a quick left onto Bailey Avenue. Go a short block to Albany Crescent (opposite a firehouse), and turn right. Drive up the hill to Kingsbridge Terrace, where there is a stop sign. Turn left, go halfway up the block, and you will see our facility on the left. Park in our lot adjoining the Early Head Start building (first building on the left).
