The DOVE Program is seeking caring and dedicated volunteers to work with survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault as Crisis Counselors / Advocates in the Emergency Departments of Columbia University Medical Center. Advocates help the survivor, family members and important others to cope with the immediate after-effects of the trauma. They accompany survivors during their stay in the emergency room ensuring that survivors understand their rights and options and that they receive sensitive and timely treatment. Advocates serve as supportive intermediaries with emergency room staff and others involved in responding to the traumatic event.
To become an Advocate you must complete the Advocate Training Program, held once a year. This year’s training will be held in January of 2010 on the following dates: Jan. 10th, Jan. 24th and Jan 31 from 8:30am – 5:00pm and Jan. 11th, 13th, 20th, 25th and 27th from 6:00pm – 9:00pm. Applications are being accepted now through November 20th. Interviews will be held during the first two weeks of December.
After completion of the training program Advocates are required to take one on-call shift each month and to commit to this position for one year. In addition all applicants must live within 30 minutes of New York Presbyterian Hospital (located in Manhattan on 168th St and Broadway).
