Tax preparers, intake workers, and administrative support for free tax prep site for low-income clients

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

I'm interested in this opportunity

Founded in 2004, the East River Development Alliance (ERDA) is an innovative nonprofit organization located in Long Island City, Queens (five minutes from Midtown) working to transform and improve New York City public housing neighborhoods by providing residents with the tools and opportunities necessary for self-sufficiency and economic mobility.

This will be the 5th year that ERDA is providing free tax prep services to public housing residents and low income earners. The service is crucial to the fight against poverty in NY. We specialize in helping our clients get the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit – credits that actually help people to keep their heads above water, especially in these trying economic times, where families who are living in poverty are feeling the impact the most. Additionally, we are providing a safe, legitimate place for tax preparation – a service that can cost hundreds of dollars and is notorious for predatory practices against low income earners. For the 2009 tax season we prepared 1700 returns and got $3 million back into the wallets of needy New Yorkers. Every year since we have started tax prep we have nearly doubled the number of returns filed the previous year.

• Volunteers choose any 4 hour slot (You can choose to work more than 4 hours in one sitting but we ask that you choose at least 4)

  • Pre-Screening, Appointment Set Up, Confirmation Letter Writing

This is one of the most important positions to make tax prep a success. Our tax prep site is appointment only, so as soon as people get their W2s, the phones start ringing! We are asking volunteers to commit to 4 hours slots to answer the phones to prescreen people for eligibility for the free service and set up appointments. We will also be looking for volunteers to send out appointment confirmation letters to all those who have been prescreened and scheduled. If you love administrative work, then this is the job for you!

Shifts for this position are available on the following days:
January 12 – February 28
• Mondays –Thursdays: 9am – 7pm
• Fridays - Saturdays: 9am -5pm

  • Tax Prep Intake Volunteer
The tax prep intake volunteer is the like the CPU of the tax prep operation. This volunteer will check clients in when they arrive for their appointments, make sure they have their proper paperwork, fill out the intake questionnaire with them and direct them to benefits enrollers, bank account representatives, and tax preparers. If you are a people person, this is a great opportunity to meet and mingle with participants.

Shifts for this position are available on the following days:
January 26 – March 6, March 13 & 20, April 3 & 10
• Mondays 3-9PM
• Tuesdays 3-9pm
• Wednesdays 3-9pm
• Thursdays 3-9pm
• Saturdays 9am – 5 pm

  • Self Prep Assistant
This is the first year that ERDA will offer clients the opportunity to prepare their own taxes in our computer lab. Clients will sign in at the regular tax site and if they are computer literate (have an email address and have purchased an item on line before) then they can opt to use the self prep service. We are looking for volunteers to man the self prep station and assist filers with ant problems they may encounter. Are you a problem solver and like working with people? If so, this is the job for you!

  • Tax Preparer
Volunteer tax preparers are the most important part of the whole operation. If you would like to become a tax preparer you will need to attend a 1-day training and pass an exam given by the IRS. There is also an accompanying online study guide to help you prepare. We are asking volunteer tax preparers to commit to at least 20 hours through the season.
