Last updated on January 27, 2010

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

I'm interested in this opportunity

Volunteer Description
The Food Bank For New York City is seeking volunteers for its Adopt A Food Program service initiative. Individuals and groups will be paired with food pantries and soup kitchens throughout the five boroughs using a matching process based on skills, interests and availability. Volunteers will have the opportunity to work side by side with those on the front lines of the fight against hunger in New York City, while food programs will be able to engage the considerable skills and talents of willing volunteers to fulfill unmet organizational needs.

Volunteer Duties
Volunteers and food programs agree to enter into a collaborative relationship with the goal of enhancing the program’s ability to improve the lives of New Yorkers who struggle to put food on the table. Because every adoption is different, there is no fixed weekly or monthly time commitment; adopters and adoptees are free to make whatever arrangements are appropriate to complete their projects. Projects and tasks will vary based on program needs but can include:
• Grant writing;
• Designing outreach, informational or promotional materials;
• Conducting outreach on income support programs, like Food Stamps or EITC;
• Raising money for refrigeration, shelving or other program needs;
• Teaching classes (e.g., computer literacy, knitting, etc.);
• Distributing or serving food on a regular basis;
• Maintenance and beautification projects; and/or
• Virtual food drives (online fundraising for food).

Individual volunteers must be able to make a 3-, 6- or 12-month commitment; a group of volunteers must be able to make a 6-, 9- or 12-month commitment. Individuals must be at least 16 years of age; youth groups must have at least one adult 18 years of age or older.

Volunteers must fill out a volunteer interest form (on the Food Bank website) and be able to attend one 1½-hour orientation session.

It was very exciting and interesting.

 I helped at the Food network event Columbus Weekend in various venues. I can't wait to do it again next year!

Excellent, I am the Food Coordinator with a food pantry in Jamaica, Queens

 We distribute food to the Jamaica, Queens community three to four times a week with the help of donations from the Food Bank of NYC and City Harvest. I am the Food Coordinator and I enjoy volunteering yearly with the Food pantry. We are open all year around trying to feed the community. We love it and I just want you know that the Food Bank of NYC has helped us tremendously and we are eternally grateful.
