Volunteer Opportunity Details:

I'm interested in this opportunity

Girls Quest was one of the first recipient of the Mayor's Volunteer Center of New York "Snapple Best People in New York" award in 2007. Girls Quest mentor, Alexandra Mitchell, nominated our agency to win this auspicious award based on the positive effects she witnessed our organization having on our teenage girls we serve along with the adult volunteer mentors who participate.

The mission of Girls Quest is to nurture girls from low-income families in New York to help them achieve their full potential and become more active members of their communities by building academic and social competence. This is done through outdoor experiential education, year-round mentoring, and leadership training.

Our community based mentor program requires a year-long commitment between the mentor and mentee. Twice a month, mentors and mentees spend a total of six to eight hours together, participating in fun and enriching activities throughout NYC metro area.

A Girls Quest mentor is a volunteer who will participate in a one-to-one mentoring relationship with a teenage girl to provide guidance and support to her mentee during the transition to young adulthood. Volunteers are carefully screened and then matched with compatible girls.

Our program is flexible in that the activities planned with your mentee are geared towards the goals that both of you establish. Goals can vary from cultural exposure to building your friendship. Basically, match outings should be positive and it should promote you and your mentee to develop a healthy and trusting relationship. Please remember that supervision and assistance is provided for all of our matches throughout your match period.

Girls Quest is looking for committed, professional women, ages 21 and older from the New York City metropolitan area to mentor our girls, ages 12 to 17, for our community-based mentor program.

In addition, mentors are required to successfully complete all four phases of the application process prior to being accepted as a Girls Quest Mentor:

  1. Applicants are required to submit a Girls Quest Mentor application along with an updated resume.

  2. Participate in an interview with a Mentor Program staff member.

  3. Applicants are required to attend an in-depth Mentor Training to prepare them for the role and responsibilities as a mentor.
