Volunteer Opportunity Details: |
|
Mrs. Gray was an elderly patient in our hospital for a week now. She did not have any family in New York, and her husband was too frail to visit her at the hospital. Mrs. Gray felt lonely and abandoned - until she met Donna. Donna was a volunteer at the hospital and was making her usual rounds on patient floors. Donna smiled and spoke in a cheerful manner. She asked Mrs. Gray if she would like to read something, or have something read to her. She spent some time sitting and talking with Donna. She was able to cheer her up in no time. The following day Donna wrote as Mrs. Gray dictated a letter to her. It was sent to Mrs. Gray's daughter in California that same day. The change in Mrs. Gray was noticed by the nurses and staff immediately. She had better appetite and became more positive about her condition. In a few days she was discharged from the hospital, but not before giving a heartfelt thanks and a warm hug to Donna, who is one of the many wonderful volunteers our hospital is lucky to have.
